Welcome to Cafe Tingis, a charming cafe nestled in the vibrant streets of the Medina in Tangier, Morocco. This historical spot, often overlooked by the hustle and bustle of modern tourism, offers a deep dive into the captivating essence of Tangier's past.

Cafe Tingis isn’t just a cafe; it’s a portal to a bygone era, echoing stories of artists, writers, and travelers who once found solace within its walls. The air is perfumed with fragrant mint and the sweet undertones of honey, evoking a sense of warmth and nostalgia as you step inside.

The atmosphere is alive yet soothing, making it an ideal setting for those who cherish the art of conversation or simply prefer to sit back and observe the world go by. Outside, the shaded terrace provides an exquisite vantage point for people-watching, where you can sip on a traditional Moroccan coffee while the vibrant life of the Medina unfolds around you. Locals and tourists alike mingle here, sharing laughter and a connection to this unique locale.

Customer reviews paint a vivid picture of Cafe Tingis. Matthew Speight describes it as a fading gem within the tourist trap, remarking on its eclectic mix of regulars and the appealing absence of inflated tourist prices—an experience quite refreshing in this bustling district. Lauren M highlights the delightful light breakfasts, complemented by friendly service, although an unexpected bill might raise an eyebrow. This such quirkiness adds to the experience, making it memorable and relatable.

For those looking to indulge their taste buds, do not miss the cafe's offerings, such as crepes (often referred to as pancakes), which are a crowd favorite, especially when paired with the sumptuous Nutella. Miles Macdonald’s recommendation truly resonates—this cafe is notably where Anthony Bourdain met journalist Jonathan Dawson, adding a layer of authenticity and historical significance to your visit. For a hint of adventure, give the avocado smoothie a shot; it promises a fresher taste than most expect and is an unexpected delight.

While the venue may show signs of age, embracing its nostalgic charm feeds into the experience of Cafe Tingis. Yes, some patrons noted cleanliness concerns, but it’s the raw, unpolished character that many revisit, reminding them of the realness that only a place like this can offer.

If you’re seeking a unique spot steeped in history with a local touch while in Tangier, make sure Cafe Tingis is on your itinerary. The blend of intriguing conversations, rich aromas, and a genuine taste of Moroccan culture awaits you at this remarkable cafe. Grab a cup, and let the stories of Tangier unfold before your very eyes.

In the hub of the tourist-trap that is the Medina these days, a fading aftertaste of Café Tingis', and thereby Tangier's, iconic past still lingers, just about. Haunted by a selection of regulars, many quite interesting, the smell of hashish, mint, and sweet honey fill the air. One of the few places I, as a non-local, wasn't over-charged as standard practice too, which is notable. Grab a cup, share a conversation or two with the local folks on neighbouring tables, and watch the world pass by.

Really nice spot to people watch. We all had a light breakfast which was delicious. The staff were friendly. Slightly random accounting for the food prices but it was still cheap so wasn’t too worried. I think it was 5-10MAD more than what we added up for the price.

Nice traditional cafe popular with locals and some tourists. I wanted to visit after watching the "Parts Unkown" documentary series by Anthony Bourdain. He met the journalist Jonathan Dawson at this cafe to discuss the nature of Tangiers and the people who've come to live here. Nice to sit on the shaded terrace outside and watch life pass by.

This place brings you back in time like 50 years. Old fashion venue, staff and system. The bill on a piece of paper handwritten. One of the things I would remark is the lack of cleaning on the crockery. Glasses had dirt from the beginning of the times. Besides that, very touristic place.

Try the crepes (listed as pancakes). I had it with Nutella but it’s listed as chocolate. The coffee is semi-strong here. I also had the avocado smoothie. It’s not as concentrated as you think. Far better than you expect. For everything in the pictures, I paid 135 MAD (Durham) but make sure to tip. I didn’t try the omelette, but my boyfriend said it was good. The cheese on the side was great but be mindful that it has a sour aftertaste. Not a strong one, but it’s present. And that taste doesn’t linger. So that’s good.

Famous old cafe in Tangier town center. Very relaxing and you can drink tea and see the locals going on about their own business

The place has quite a history to it. And a certain subtle vibe, which takes some time to sense. The Moroccan tea and pancakes didn't taste any different, yet we went here every day during our stay in Tangier.
